A Look at the Major Influences Behind Your Favorite Video Games

UbiSoft initially planned Assassin’s Creed as Prince of Persia: Assassins and would have the player take on the role of one of the Prince’s bodyguards, so that’s a huge influence right there.

Another big inspiration is the 1938 novel Alamut, which a fortress in the Assassin’s Creed universe is named after. The novel is also where the phrase “Nothing is true, everything is allowed” (“Nothing is an absolute reality, all is permitted” in the novel) was born.

The franchise also drew a lot of influences from The Prince, a political treatise by the Italian diplomat, historian and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli.
